CanExport SMEs

CanExport SMEs is the federal government's primary support for Canadian small and medium businesses entering or expanding in international markets. Coverage tightened for 2026-27: minimum 3 FTE, minimum $300K revenue, agriculture/agri-food/fish/seafood now excluded. Per-project cap is $50K and US-market projects share a smaller pool of the total budget.

Common questions

What expenses does CanExport cover?
Travel, accommodation, trade show participation, market research, intellectual property protection in target markets, translation and adaptation of marketing materials, business advisory services in-market, and certifications required to sell into the target country. Your existing operating costs are not eligible.
Can I apply for multiple target markets?
Yes. A CanExport application can target up to five international markets in one project. Each market needs its own justification: why this market, why now, what's your existing traction.
How competitive is CanExport?
Approval rates have historically run around 50-60% for well-prepared applications, but the 2026-27 budget allocation tightened. Strong applications show specific buyer leads, a clear market-entry plan, and realistic budget detail by market.
